Three Australian men who pleaded guilty to the rape of a 17-year-old girl have avoided prison after reaching an agreement with Croatian prosecutors to pay their victim A$30,000.
Dylan Djohan, 23, Ashwin Kumar, 23, and Waleed Latif, 21, all from Melbourne, raped the Norweigan teenager at a bar in Split, Croatia, in July 2015.
The men, facing up to 15 years in prison, were due to appear in court last Monday, before lawyers reached a deal enabling them to walk free.
Under the deal the men entered guilty pleas and were given sentences of one year in jail, reduced to a five-year good behaviour bond.
The men have now all arrived home in Melbourne.
Djohan, Kumar and Latif were travelling with a larger group of Australians headed to Croatia’s Ultra Music Festival last July.
Prosecutors say one of the men dragged the girl to the toilets of the late night bar, before the other two followed and joined in with the assault.
Croatian woman’s rights campaigner Sanja Sarnavka, told reporters the prosecutor should not have allowed the men to pay to avoid jail.
“If they can afford it, those who are indicted will pay for the best lawyers, pay the damages and receive a minimum sentence or even go free,” she said.
“In a democratic state, everyone should have the same treatment, regardless of their wealth or assets.”
