THE bodies of up to 300 women and children have been dumped in mass graves by Islamic State militants in just two weeks, highlighting the brutality of the twisted cult.
A total of five graves have been found near the Iraqi town of Sinjar, where ISIS fighters were driven out by Kurdish forces and US-backed airstrikes earlier this month.
Around 100 bodies were discovered in three mass graves on Sunday, a day after a booby-trapped grave containing 120 women was found and adding to two graves unearthed two weeks ago.
One, near Sinjar’s centre was estimated to contain 78 elderly women’s bodies, and another, about 10 miles outside of war-ravaged town, contained between 50 and 60 bodies of men, women and children.
But the task of recovering and identifying the dead is perilous as the fanatical Islamists have mined the area surrounding the graves in a final punishment to the local Iraqi community.
Much of Sinjar has been levelled during fighting between ISIS extremists and local rebels as well as coalition airstrikes.
Local militia allied with the Kurdish rebels were seen packing human remains into plastic bags and heavy construction equipment is being brought in to excavate the sites.
ISIS captured Sinjar during its rampage across northern Iraq in the summer of 2014 and killed and captured thousands of members of the Yazidi religious minority, including women forced into sexual slavery.
Hundreds of women are thought to still be in captivity, those who have escaped say many Yazidi women are forced to convert to Islam and marry ISIS fighters.
The group’s rapid expansion in Iraq’s north, which included a push toward the city of Erbil, spurred the US-led coalition to launch a campaign of airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and later Syria.
